Guest speakers at our State Conference this year were two high profile musicians, Wendy Lorenz and Robert Schubert. Wendy Lorenz, pianist and teacher, delivered the annual Jan Sedivka Memorial Lecture, presenting a fascinating account of her studies in London with the remarkable pedagogue Maria Curcio, student of Artur Schnabel. Curcio became a legend in her own time, who was the ultimate artistic ‘door opener’ for a generation of internationally acclaimed pianists. The lecture included details of Curcio’s fascinating life and close association with many of the great musical figures of the 20th century, as well as her approach to interpretation and technique. Robert Schubert, clarinettist and Alexander Technique specialist gave an introduction and over-view of the Alexander Technique and then offered insights into its practical application in a masterclass with talented young students of members.
