October 20, 2013 ~ TMTA State Awards (North and North West)
Students of members from the Northern and North West Branches came together to perform at a most delightful afternoon concert, vying for State Awards, which are awarded each year to outstanding students. The adjudicator for the 2013 Awards was Lyndle van Zetten. This year’s winners are:
Madame Helen George Award (Grade 3-5)
First Prize: Rily Fletcher (piano), student of Lyn Loudon. Second Prize: Inighion Quinn (violin), student of Gail Tivendale
Ann McGarry Award (Grade 6-8/Certificate of Performance)
First prize: Katrina Wong (piano), student of Lynda Nicholls. Second prize: Lauren Smith (piano), student of Ruth Parsons
Graeme Buchanan Award (Diploma)
No North/North West award this year as there were no entrants for the section.
August 18, 2013 ~ Southern Branch Piano Competitions
(incorporating both the Brenda Hean Competition and the Junior Pianoforte Shield)
Congratulations to all performers and teachers. Performances were of a high standard. The Southern Branch was fortunate to have Petr Divis as adjudicator. Results are as follows:
Section 1 ~ Junior Pianoforte Shield (Grade 2 or lower) in memory of Mollie Retjoe
First prize: Mia Shinkfield, student of Lynette Smith. Second Prize: Amelia Millington, student of Karen Clark
Section 2 ~ Intermediate (Brenda Hean Piano Competition) now incorporating the Madame Helen George Award (Grade 3-5)
Prizewinner: Olivia Eade, student of Annette Stilwell. Also winner of the Brenda Hean Award and AMEB Award.
Section 3 ~ Senior (Brenda Hean Piano Competition) now incorporating the Ann McGarry Award (Grade 6-8)
Prizewinner: Yuvini Perera, student of Victoria Burley. Also winner of the Brenda Hean Award and the McCann’s Music Award
Section 4 ~ Graeme Buchanan Award (Diploma Level)
Prizewinner: Joanne Li, student of Jody Heald. Also winner of the TMTA Award for the Most Promising Performer.
This was held in Launceston, at Launceston Church Grammar. Lynda, a very experienced pianist, accompanist and pipe organist, enthusiastically shared her expertise with each participant, adapting her approach to the different needs of each problem presented. An enjoyable, informative and encouraging afternoon.
May 24, 2013 ~ TMTA Function at Government House, Hobart
The Patron of TMTA, Mrs Frances Underwood hosted a 90 minute concert at Government House on Friday 24th May showcasing the best of Tasmania’s young performers. More photos here.
April 13, 2013 ~ Jazz Improvisation Workshop with Robert Allen (North and North West)
A very successful and enjoyable workshop was held in Devonport with Robert Allen, developer of the Allen Keys. Robert explained and demonstrated a method of jazz improvisation from a visual perspective.
March 2, 2013 ~ TMTA Annual State Conference
TMTA holds an annual conference each year for its members. This year the opening address, given by Professor Michael Roe, was entitled, “Percy Grainger in Tasmania 1909-1935”.
In Session 1, Dr Arabella Teniswood-Harvey, Co-ordinator of the Junior Piano Program, and Lecturer in Piano and Music History at UTAS, presented the fourth Sedivka Lecture, “Music in Art: Rethinking (and refreshing) Schubert’s Moments musicaux via Whistler’s Six Projects”. This lecture demonstrated the interrelationship between art and music.
Pianist and fortepianist, Dr Julie Haskell presented Session 2, a very informative lecture/demonstration based on her PhD thesis, “Piano Repertoire of the English Classical School”.
