Join pianist Meriel Owen for a hands-on piano workshop! This workshop will explore the art of solo piano performance, focusing on technique, interpretation, and how to bring a piece to life on stage.

Participants are warmly encouraged to perform a solo work during the workshop - to participate in the masterclass, please email Lynette Smith with details of playing level, student names, and piece to be performed. $10 per performer.

Observer/audience is free.

Hosted at a private home in Kingston Beach, Hobart. On-street parking, and some stairs at the venue. TMTA Members should login to the TMTA website to register their free entry.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their performance confidence, for teacher to share in a community of learning from colleagues, and connect with friends and colleauges!

MERIEL OWEN

Meriel studied her Diploma of Music at Canberra School of Music in 1985, before heading to the US to study her Masters at the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in piano chamber music and accompanying. Meriel is a Churchill Fellow, after receiving the 2013 honour to study harp in Austria and Germany.

She is a freelance teacher and musician on both piano and harp and has played with orchestras across Australia, including the Tasmanian, Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra Symphony Orchestras, and Opera Australia.

As an accompanist, she has worked at the Australian National University and as a freelance including innumerable student exams and recitals, specialising in string repertoire.

As a chamber musician and collaborative artist, Meriel has performed at many festivals across Australia and the US, and is a regular with Virtuosi Tasmania.

With over 30 years of teaching experience in Australia and the US, Meriel has taught at Canberra School of Music, Radford College (ACT), St Mary's College (TAS) and has intermittently taught privately between a full calendar of performance and travel engagements.

Join us for an inspiring piano masterclass with acclaimed French pianist and educator Sarah Cabrol-Douat. Open to students of all ages and abilities, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to develop your technique, deepen musical expression, and gain fresh performance insights. Whether you're preparing for exams, performances, or simply passionate about piano, Sarah's engaging and supportive style will leave you motivated and musically energised.

To participate in the masterclass, limited spaces are available so please apply via email to Dominique Baker with details of playing level and piece to be performed.

Participant and Observer: $10 purchased online or at the door.

After the workshop, join Sarah for a piano recital at 7:30pm, for a gold coin donation.

Sarah Cabrol-Douat

Sarah’s career has taken her from Australia to Moscow, from Germany to Paris and London. Her playing reflects a wide influence of musical cultures and pianistic styles.

Her innate ability to communicate with an audience is heightened by the intimacy of sound she creates through a sensitivity of touch producing a large array of colours and sound layers.

An avid exponent of the late romantics, in particular Brahms and Rachmaninov, Sarah feels equally at home with the classical repertoire. She has performed in such venues as Steinway and Sons and St. Martin in the Fields in London, the Chapelle Eugene Napoleon in Paris, with the Duisburg Orchestra (Germany) and as part of the International Festival of Mantua (Italy).

Based in Paris, Sarah performs both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles.

REGISTRATIONS OPEN SOON!

TMTA Southern branch invites all instrumental and vocal students of TMTA members to participate in an afternoon of music making and performances at the 2025 TMTA Music Competition.

A friendly and supportive environment, the TMTA Music Competition is a great opportunity for students to perform to a small audience and share in live performances together. An adjudicator will provide feedback and adjudicate the awards in various sections on the day.

Students need not have completed an exam to participate in the sections/awards. A copy of the music should be provided for the adjudicator on the day and entry forms must be received prior to the performance day.

Audience entry is $10 per adult (children are free). $20 student participant fees are to be paid at the door on the day.

Entries close on Wednesday 1st September and must be emailed to Lynette Smith.
