     "Thinking outside the square -
            The First Fleet Piano"

“In a house in Sydney, a piano made in 1786 by the London-based German piano maker Frederick Beck (fl. 1756-ca. 1798) sits unobtrusively in the entrance hallway.  The instrument is a typical example of an English square piano of the era, except for one feature; uncharacteristically, the instrument has folding legs, an unprecedented feature in a piano of the time.  These legs are but one of the tantalizing clues that suggest that the instrument may be the piano that was brought to Botany Bay on board the flagship of the First Fleet, the Sirius.  Is this instrument the First Fleet piano?  Find out, as Dr. Geoffrey Lancaster takes you on a journey to late-18th century England.  Explore the piano's developmental history and its role in late-18th century English society.  Travel with the First Fleet piano to Botany Bay on board the Sirius.  Hear stories from the lives of those who heard and played the First Fleet piano, and learn of the circumstances within which the First Fleet piano contributed its unique enrichments to the quality of their daily life.”
